The Supreme Court of India sentenced Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt to five years in prison in connection with the 1993 bomb attacks in Bombay (now Mumbai) on Thursday. The court upheld his 2006 conviction on charges of possessing “3 AK-56 rifles and its ammunition, one 9mm pistol and its cartridges and hand grenades smuggled into the country,” according to official court records. Dutt claimed the weapons were acquired to protect his family.
The deadly bombing, which killed 257 people and injured 700 more, was allegedly retaliation for the demolition of the 16th-century Babri Mosque in northern India. According to CNN.com, Dutt will have to serve 3½ years, which are left after having spent 18 months in jail already. Dutt have four weeks to surrender to authorities.
Sanjay Dutt have several movies releasing soon, including Zanjeer, a remake of the Hindi 1973 film of the same title, tentatively slated to release on May 10th and Policegiri, a Hindi remake of the 2003 Tamil movie Saamy, set to release on June 14th. I think it’s a safe bet to say he will not be at any of the film premieres. I’ll keep you posted.
